Dallas Winds Selects Michelle Hall as Executive Director

Hall succeeds Kim Campbell, who retires in April after 39 years

DALLAS – March 6, 2024 – The Dallas Winds, the nation’s leading professional civilian wind band, has selected Michelle Hall as its next Executive Director, effective March 1.

Mrs. Hall succeeds Dallas Winds founder and long-time Executive Director Kim Campbell, whose previously announced retirement becomes effective April 12. Over the coming weeks, Mrs. Hall will work closely with Mr. Campbell to ensure a smooth transition among the organization’s Board of Trustees (“the Board”), operations, musicians and staff. Mr. Campbell will serve as an advisor to Mrs. Hall and the Board until his retirement.

During Mr. Campbell’s exceptional 39-year career leading the Dallas Winds, the band has entertained millions of people, including at Dallas’ Morton H. Meyerson Concert Center (its home venue), on tour and, increasingly, through recordings and streamed media. The Dallas Winds’ recording excellence has been recognized with five Grammy Award nominations among its 20-item discography, and more than 100,000 sales of its recordings.

Reflecting on his long tenure with the Dallas Winds, Mr. Campbell said, “I am very proud to have played a role in forming such a high caliber ensemble that is unlike any other civilian band in the world. I am equally proud of the educational programs that the Dallas Winds provides, including the largest inner-city band camp in the U.S. for the Dallas Independent School District (“DISD”), concerts for DISD 5th graders, DISD honor bands and an invitational wind band festival for middle and high school band students.”

Campbell added, “I am going to miss being a part of the ‘esprit de corps’ among the Dallas Winds’ musicians, Artistic Director, staff and Board members. I am confident that the organization’s mission, programs and excellence will continue to thrive with Mrs. Hall at the helm.”

Mrs. Hall joins the Dallas Winds after completing a successful 23-year tenure as the Executive Director of the Victoria Symphony in Victoria, Texas. Under her leadership, the Victoria Symphony strengthened fundraising efforts to increase its operating budget through growth of the annual fund program, corporate donations and special event revenue; achieved growth in its endowment; and sharpened its commitment to educational impact, community connections, artistic excellence and access to music.

Hall said, “I am thrilled to be joining the Dallas Winds and to work with Jerry Junkin and our outstanding musicians, staff and Board members to support the artistry and educational mission of this world-class ensemble.” Victoria Symphony Conductor Daryl One said, “Michelle will certainly be missed by the Victoria Symphony Orchestra family, and I will personally miss her professionalism, camaraderie, integrity and loyalty.”

Jerry Junkin, long-time Dallas Winds’ Artistic Director said: “I am delighted to work with Michelle Hall as our next Executive Director as we enter an exciting new chapter of growth and exceptional musical experiences. Mrs. Hall is the perfect person at the perfect time to join the Dallas Winds family, and I could not be more pleased to work with her in growing and adding to the legacy of this amazing ensemble.”

Prior to Mrs. Hall’s appointment, the Dallas Winds Board Transition Committee conducted a national search, screening more than 70 qualified candidates from across the globe. The Committee thanks Jerry Junkin, Players Committee Chair Margaret Shin-Fischer, Mr. Campbell and members of the Dallas arts community who partnered with the Committee to interview candidates and identify the right leader to fill this important role.

“We are thrilled to have Michelle Hall join the Dallas Winds as the new Executive Director,” said Board chair Carrie Huff. “Michelle’s achievements made her the clear choice to continue the Dallas Winds’ tradition of artistic excellence and to further its mission of educating the next generation of band music fans.”

The public is invited to join the Dallas Winds on Saturday, April 6, for a special event honoring the retirement of Kim Campbell and benefitting the mission and programming of the Dallas Winds. The Dallas Winds Board has launched a Legacy Campaign to ensure that Kim Campbell’s vision continues for the organization to keep entertaining and educating the community. Tax-deductible contributions to the Dallas Winds Legacy Campaign can be made at https://dallaswinds.org/give/.

The Dallas Winds will complete its 2023-2024 season with upcoming concerts at the Morton Meyerson Symphony Center, on Tuesday, March 26, (“The Pines of Rome”), Tuesday, April 9, (“Premieres and Farewells”) and Tuesday, May 14, (a rescheduled performance of “In this Circle”).
